This makes me really angry. Expressions of contempt for us, the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, Guardians, and others of the Armed Forces of the United States, are expressions of ingratitude for our safeguarding the very rights and freedoms the people of the United States possess that are paid for with our lives, our bodies, and our treasures. It is behavior such as this that makes it a challenge to recruit other people to take on the responsibility of safeguarding the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. I could contemplate the consequences that the miscreants should endure. Perhaps sending them to the combat zones using Selective Service, with the intent that they become fodder for the opponents of the United States

We live in a time where civility is lost. I’m a bit sad after reading this.

I’ve been following along and being an empathetic person, I understand the family’s feelings of loss and grief. There is line from ‘Saving Private Ryan’ that I remember, something to the effect of being hopeful that time assuages your grief.

I imagine having to confront the vandalism rips the scar open anew and brings the anguish right back.

If I could talk to the family, I’d only remind them we aren’t all that way. Only people who with small minds act like this & to not let ignorance rob them of the heroism that runs in their blood.

That about sums up where America is today. Is this considered a felony? If not, it should be!

It takes a lot to make me ANGRY, but this would be one thing that would. McCullum died serving his country. Only a coward or cowards would do this to his Memorial. Only cowards would do something this HATEFUL to a Marine, who did NOTHING to them. Why did they STEAL his wrestling shoes ? Hate, Evil, Revenge ?

Personally, I never served in the US Military, but I support them 100%. Many in my family did & so did many of my friends & co-workers. Working Security, I met many Marines, & I knew if the SHTF, they had my "6". Any evil deed like this done on any Military woman or man, is an attack on all of them & myself included. I take this personally.

When the person or persons who are caught did this (they will be), I hope the Judge would use some creative sentencing. Some suggestions for the Judge to consider.

- Jail time of 90 days, no Canteen privilege's, no family visitors.

- Type a 3 page letter of apology to the McCullum family.

- Serve 300 hours of Community Service in a cemetery, preferably a military cemetery: cleaning memorials, headstones & statues.

- Give a speech each year, at local high schools & colleges, about the sacrifices that military members & their family's make, for the next ten years.

I clicked the "LIKE" button because I didn't see anything at all about this in any media or web site but yours Emily - my LIKE is a THANK YOU to you Emily for continuing to cover the McCullum family story.

~ ALL gave some, and some gave ALL ~

Your sacrifice was not in vain, Marine Corps Lance Corporal Rylee McCullum.

I hope this Sunday for you was peaceful. For whatever reason I tuned into FNC and am reminded that this regime in DC remains a charlie foxtrot on roller skates. The only other thing of note is suddenly I would like some Israeli Salad for some of my meals. I think you might also enjoy. Look up the recipe.

Beautiful poem and the lowlifes that defaced that memorial won’t be apprehended unless they are stupid enough to ‘brag’ about it - knowing what they did, maybe they will get caught as I doubt these are Mensa members...

This is overwhelming and heartbreaking. The Sept 11th memorial here in Coney Island was vandalized in October 2014.

Yes, search out an punish the vandals. At the same time remember what the rock has been used for.

We had a “graffiti tractor” at the city limits. It had sat unused for many years and people used it to note events and send messages. How long the message remained depended on the support or someone’s need to send their own message. As example, the message about 9/11 stayed up for months. Graduation messages got repainted quickly as rival schools and different students had their say.

The stone, based on the article is one such “graffiti” spot. Without doubt, other heartfelt messages were there before Rylee McCollum’s memorial was painted. Given the purpose of the rock, it’s doubtful Rylee McCollum’s memorial would be perpetual.
